The term "alert" is often used interchangeably with "response" and preseizure "prediction". Seizure Response when a dog will alert family members, that the person with epilepsy is having a seizure. They are also trained to help their adult handlers during a seizure, either by staying by them, fetching the telephone or "life alert" system, the first responders (a "911" call). In some cases, seizure response dogs can be trained to roll a person on their side following a seizure, however, this isn't commonplace and it depends on the size of the dog and the individuals post ictal features that a dog can work with. Seizure Alert - response - see above Seizure Alert - prediction - Dogs that seem to predict seizures may be sensing an oncoming seizure and alert their handler, either seconds, minutes or hours prior a seizure. It is unclear what these dogs are sensing, but they seem to associate what they are sensing with an oncoming seizure and may exhibit responses, such as vocalizing (barking, whining, etc), or a physical response (pawing, licking, etc) or alerting others such as family members. The Delta Society is an excellent and well respected organization. Please read their article Service Dogs for People with Seizure Disorders www.deltasociety.org/ServiceArticlesSeizure.htm
